US-born lone soldier killed in Lebanon as Israel battles Hezbollah and Iran on multiple fronts

Israel’s Anglo community was saddened on Sunday morning at the announcement that one of their own had fallen in battle. Sergeant Moshe Yitzchak Hacohen Katz, 22, was born in New Haven, Connecticut and came to Israel to serve in the IDF as a “Lone Soldier” when the Swords of Iron war began. He was serving with his unit in southern Lebanon overnight Saturday when they came under heavy bombardment from Hezbollah rocket and drone strikes, which hit at the same time as Israeli cities were coming under attack from a barrage of Iranian-launched ballistic missiles.

Katz was killed when a rocket struck the position where he and his comrades were deployed. Three other soldiers at the station were wounded.

In separate incidents overnight Saturday, several other IDF troops were wounded, while Iranian missile attacks inside Israel caused damage but no additional casualties.

Katz’s parents, Mendy and Devorah, were recently in Israel to visit their son. The family had planned for him to spend the Passover holiday with his parents in the U.S. this week, but he decided to stay with his unit when they were deployed to Lebanon.

"My oldest son with a zest for life and jokes," Mendy said. “My heart is shattered, and the wound is real. May he be a malitz yosher (spiritual intercessor) for only good things."

Defense Minister Israel Katz (no relation) declared that Moshe Yitzchak “chose to leave an entire life in the US… and enlist to the IDF out of a deep sense of mission and Zionism. I salute him for his heroism and his contribution to the security of the State of Israel.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also posted on 𝕏 that "Moshe immigrated to Israel from the United States, enlisted in the Paratroopers Brigade, and fought bravely in defense of the homeland. On behalf of all citizens of Israel, we embrace Moshe’s family in their difficult hour and wish a swift and full recovery to our fighters who were wounded in the same incident."

The fighting overnight between Saturday and Sunday, which resulted in Katz’s death and the wounding of so many other soldiers, took place in the context of a fierce battle between the IDF and Hezbollah in south Lebanon, as well as the wider conflict with Iran. Another element was added to this battle over the weekend when the Houthis in Yemen announced that they were joining the war and launched ballistic missiles at Israel from the south.

Katz is the fifth IDF soldier to lose his life while fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon since the Iranian-backed terror militia entered the war against Israel by launching rockets into the Galilee on March 2, almost two days after Israel and the U.S. launched a joint strike against Iran on Feb. 28.

Three Israeli civilians have also lost their lives amidst the Hezbollah-launched rocket barrages into northern Israel and the IDF’s counter-attacks. Israeli officials have warned that more casualties are likely as the ground incursion into southern Lebanon will need to continue. However, it is limited at this time because the Air Force is so heavily engaged in strikes on Iran’s military infrastructure, industrial capacity and political leadership.

For now, the IDF ground forces are engaged in a holding action in southern Lebanon, blocking the threat from Hezbollah to Israeli border communities but not pushing too far north until adequate air support can be deployed. As soon as the campaign against Iran is concluded, a more intense air and ground campaign against Hezbollah can be initiated.

There is, however, another variable in this situation, as forces loyal to the regime of Syria’s interim President, Abu Muhammed al-Jolani, also known as Ahmed al-Sharaa, are massing on Lebanon’s eastern border. The internationally recognized government of Lebanon has done its best to try to confront Hezbollah, but the Trump Administration is reportedly growing impatient with its lack of capacity.

This has led some analysts to speculate that Washington would be satisfied with the al-Jolani regime taking physical control of Lebanon north of the Litani while Israel establishes a buffer zone in the south, squeezing out Hezbollah and by extension, terminating Iranian influence in the country for good.
