'Death to Trump, Netanyahu': Weeklong Khamenei funeral continues across Iran, Iraq

The funeral procession of assassinated former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei witnessed its final day in the capital city of Tehran on Monday, as the regime prepares to move the body to the Shia holy cities of Qom in Iran and Karbala and Najaf in Iraq, before the final burial in the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. 

In previous days, various regime figures attended the funeral ceremonies, including some whose status had been unknown following Israel’s leadership-targeting strikes during Operation Roaring Lion.

Among those seen in attendance on Monday was former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was rumored to have been considered by Israel and the United States as a possible alternative leader if Operations Roaring Lion and Epic Fury would have led to a regime collapse. 

Missing again from the ceremonies was Khamenei’s son Mojtaba Khamenei, who was elected as the new supreme leader in March, following the announcement of Ali Khamenei’s death. 

The absence of the younger Khamenei, along with the failure of the regime to demonstrate any clear signs of life since the Feb. 28 strike, has caused many to question whether Mojtaba is truly running the government, or if his name is being used by elements within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to give credence to their own decisions and strategy. 

At the same time, the third day of ceremonies again saw calls for revenge on the U.S. and particularly President Donald Trump, who many regime supporters blame for Khamenei’s death. 

On Sunday, Iranian poet Mohammad Rasouli addressed the crowd shortly before prayers in Khamenei’s honor began, saying, “From now on the shroud is our garment. I swear by your blood; Trump’s murder is our responsibility.” 

“Why is the most bastard man in the world still alive?” Rasouli asked. “The world is no longer a good place for Trump. Why should we not kill the man who killed our imam? It would be a disgrace if we did not.” 

In response, the crowds chanted slogans, such as “Death to America!” and “No compromise, no surrender, only revenge.” 

Banners and signs held by funeral attendees also called for Trump’s demise, along with that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Some protesters held small, black signs showing Prime Minister Netanyahu with a targeting reticle over his head, reading, “There will be blood,” in English. 

Ezzatollah Zarghami, a member of the Supreme Cyberspace Council, said the presence of regime supporters at the funeral conveyed the message that Iranians are seeking revenge and will not forget. 

Speaking to the IRGC-affiliated Fars News, Zarghami said, “Our first word is revenge — a revenge that disciplines the enemies and soothes the hearts of the people for the grief that has been inflicted upon them.” 

During Ali Khamenei’s funeral ceremony this morning, red flags were waved as a symbol of revenge while crowds chanted: “No compromise, no surrender, only revenge”.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Khamenei’s funeral demonstrated the capabilities of Israel’s military. 

“Ayatollah Khamenei, whose funeral is currently taking place, was eliminated by Israel because he initiated and led the plan to destroy Israel in Iran and the region,” Katz said. “Any Iranian leader who tries to promote plans to destroy Israel again will also be thwarted.”  

Katz also said the “chants of ‘Death to Trump’ during the funeral are a disgrace and indicate the true nature of the ayatollah regime.”  

The strikes “led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, removed the immediate threat of destruction from Israel and severely damaged Iran's strategic capabilities.” 

At the funeral, Iranian military spokesman Brig.-Gen. Mohammad Akraminia said that the Iranian regime is using the current ceasefire to strengthen forces. 

“We have repeatedly announced that we will use the opportunity of the ceasefire to enhance our combat capabilities, and we will not miss a single moment or become careless,” Akraminia said, in a video shown on Iranian sites Fars News and Mehr News. 

“We have updated our target bank. If the enemy attacks and violates, it will receive an even more crushing and regretful response than in the past,” Akraminia added. 

During the opening ceremonies, the Iranian regime used verses from the Quran to deliver messages conveying its opinions regarding the nations sending official delegations. 

The Saudi delegation received a passage describing the battle of Badr, fought in A.D. 624, implying the kingdom was among the “disbelieving.” 

“There was certainly a sign for you in the two armies that met in battle: one fighting in the cause of God and the other disbelieving,” the verse read. 

Qatar, who has pursued a path of appeasement, received a verse from Surah al-Fath: “That Allah may forgive you for your past and future shortcomings, perfect His favor upon you, and guide you along the Straight Path…,” which appeared to imply that Doha needed to repent from supporting Western powers. 

Turkey received a verse rebuking its reluctance to support Iran via Surah an-Nisa, verse 95, which reads: “Allah has elevated in rank those who strive with their wealth and their lives above those who stay behind.” 

The Hezbollah delegation received a verse from Surah al-Ma’idah, including the phrase “party of Allah,” from which Hezbollah takes its name: “Whoever allies themselves with Allah, His Messenger, and fellow believers, then it is certainly Allah’s party that will prevail.” 

Pakistan, which also mediated for Iran in the negotiations with the U.S., and has supported Tehran during the ceasefire, received a verse from Surah al-Israh which speaks of honor: “And say, 'My Lord! Grant me an honorable entrance and an honorable exit and give me a supporting authority from Yourself'.”
