The darkness of A.I.
In late February, there was a dispute between Anthropic and the U.S. Department of War over the use of A.I. in the U.S. military, with the CEO of Anthropic stating concerns of mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons [1]. The POTUS responded on Truth Social with the accusation that Anthropic was uncooperative because of political motives, rather than ethical concerns [2]. When anyone who opposes the POTUS in any form is invariably accused of being politically motivated, that is a fundamental sociopolitical problem, because that can be self-serving leverage. This explains in large part all of the yes-man personalities not only in the U.S. administration but also throughout society and even in evangelical circles. They don’t dare be accused of being a leftist, labeled as unpatriotic, or even alleged as a threat to national security.
Sign of the Times
Many evangelicals are becoming of the persuasion that A.I. is just another technology to be used. With the development of the printing press, copies of the Bible could be made in quantity. With the radio, preaching of the Word could be broadcast. With the internet, ministry around the world could be possible by networking. What is different about A.I. is that it is not conventional technology. Confusion abounds as to what exactly A.I. is. That confusion is part of the scheme of normalizing and rationalizing A.I. in the more comprehensive sense. There is what can be considered “A.I. lite”, which includes things such as search tools and creative arts software, and then there is intense A.I., such as mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. It is noteworthy that the development of A.I., in the comprehensive sense, is in close involvement with the government.
What Scripture Has to Say
There is a growing trend of not only acceptance of A.I. but also partiality to it. The dangers and warnings are dismissed in favor of worldly interests, rationalizing that A.I. is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible. However, A.I. is indeed inferred and implied, and we can draw that from Genesis, Daniel, Revelation, and the entire Bible holistically. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says that the antichrist will proclaim himself to be God. Since the antichrist is not omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent, he will aspire to have these qualities by means of A.I. Omniscience and omnipotence are pursued through the use of A.I., and it can be inferred that the image of the beast (Revelation 13:14-15) will be an A.I.-based attempt at omnipresence. There is also a striking similarity with A.I. and the account of the tower of Babel in Genesis 11. According to 1 Corinthians 10:11, there are principles exemplified in the accounts of the Old Testament that serve as warnings to us in contemporary times. Genesis 11:1 records that the whole world had one language and one speech, and with A.I. it is as if this is reattained. Verse 6 is very peculiar in that it says nothing that they plan to do would be impossible for them. This speaks to the extent of capabilities, as there is a clear correlation with A.I. The exponential increase in knowledge through A.I. aligns with Daniel 12:4, and A.I. is dangerous because of consolidation of control and power.
The Conclusion of the Matter
It is obvious that A.I. is conducive to deception. The Lord Jesus, in Matthew 24 in his discourse on the end times, emphasized watching out for deception. It is a tragic deception that A.I. is needed for competitive edge, whether at the national level, personal level, or in the church. Instead of gimmicks or innovative machinery, the righteous alternative is relying on the Holy Spirit in a very practical way. 1 John 4:4 says “Greater is He that is living in you”.
