The Israel Advanced Technology Industries Association (IATI) held its first strategic diplomatic-tech forum in Tel Aviv last Wednesday, bringing together leading figures from Israel’s innovation ecosystem and the international diplomatic community to strengthen ties between the Israeli technology sector and the global economy.

IATI, which serves as the umbrella organization for Israel’s technology and life sciences industries, hosted approximately 100 participants, including senior executives from Israeli technology companies, venture capital investors, foreign diplomats and economic attachés from a range of countries, including China, Japan, India, Austria and Singapore.

The gathering aimed to strengthen ties between Israel’s technology sector and the international diplomatic community, fostering economic cooperation, investment and cross-border partnerships.

Among the prominent Israeli attendees were Foreign Ministry Director-General Eden Bar Tal, Pitango Managing Partner Eyal Niv, PSG Equity Managing Director Ronen Nir and Viola Ventures Co-founder and Managing Partner Shlomo Dovrat.

IATI CEO and President Karin Mayer Rubinstein, who hosted the event, explained the importance of strengthening ties between the Israeli tech community and the global economy.

“At a time when the State of Israel and the Israeli high-tech industry are facing complex challenges on the security, economic and international fronts, strengthening the connections between the Israeli ecosystem and the international community is more important than ever,” Rubinstein stated.

The conference focused on global investment trends, artificial intelligence, investment opportunities in Israel and the resilience of the Israeli tech sector. Rubinstein said the purpose of the forum was to establish “genuine connections between the worlds of investment, innovation and the diplomatic system.”

Israel has been globally known as the 'Start-Up Nation' due to the high concentration of start-up businesses and in recent years has emerged as one of the world’s leading tech hubs outside of Silicon Valley, California.

However, the Israeli economy has faced serious challenges following the Hamas Oct. 7, 2023, attack, with business leaders and employees performing military reserve duty, growing calls for boycott and long periods of suspended flight traffic to and from the Jewish state. Israel’s credit rating was also temporarily downgraded during the war due to geopolitical uncertainty linked to the war with Iran and its regional proxies.

There are signs of financial recovery in Israel. Last month, the global S&P Global Ratings predicted solid 5% growth for the Israeli economy after nearly three years of unfinished war. The OECD also predicted that Israel would recover following the U.S.-brokered Gaza ceasefire last October.

While Tel Aviv remains Israel’s leading technology and venture capital hub, the country’s tech industry has become increasingly diversified in recent years. Growing innovation centers have emerged in Haifa and northern Israel, as well as in the Jerusalem area, while the Negev Desert in the south has established itself as Israel’s newest global technology frontier.

“If we transform the Negev into a global hub of desert innovation, agrotourism, and tourism, it will become an attractive magnet for young people who will want to move and work in the Negev. We really see it as a national existential opportunity,” explained Nicole Hod Stroh, CEO of philanthropic organization Merage Foundation Israel. The Negev accounts for approximately 60% of Israel’s land area but is home to only about 10% of the country's population.
