Iranian missile warhead strikes near Jerusalem’s Old City, endangering holy sites
An Iranian ballistic missile warhead struck a site alarmingly close to the Old City of Jerusalem on Saturday, landing just meters from some of the holiest ground on earth, including the Western Wall and the Temple Mount.
Israeli police confirmed the strike after an explosion was reported shortly after U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran began. Smoke was seen rising from the impact site west of the Old City's ancient walls at the Sultan's Pool, an outdoor events venue situated outside the Old City's western edge, less than a kilometer from the Temple Mount.
The proximity of the missile strike to these revered locations – sacred to Jews, Muslims, and Christians – highlights the indiscriminate nature of Iran's missile campaign against Israel.
While current IDF Home Front Command restrictions have kept worshippers away from sacred places, the strike serves as a chilling reminder of what could happen on any normal day – had the missile's trajectory shifted by just a few hundred meters, it could have brought catastrophic destruction to irreplaceable holy sites and killed countless people gathered in prayer.
This incident further illustrates the point that when Iran targets Israeli cities, it does not differentiate between military installations and holy sites, nor does it automatically guarantee a strike solely on Jewish neighborhoods and cities, sparing only Arab ones. It also raises urgent concerns about safety measures with escalating conflict in the entire region, not just with Iran.
In the aftermath of the missile attack, police and bomb disposal teams scoured the area, uncovering an Iranian ballistic missile warhead alongside incendiary and explosive materials strewn across areas nearby. Video released by police suggests the missile was likely intercepted, sending fragments into the area rather than striking the ground directly.
The warhead was “neutralized” and rendered safe by Jerusalem District bomb disposal experts, while authorities have so far declined to comment on the details of the impact.
