Gaza flotilla activist admits provoking scrutiny through confrontation with Israel was main goal
A member of the Gaza Sumud Flotilla, who also reserved as a co-boat organizer, candidly acknowledged on Monday that the movement’s primary objective is generating international attention through direct confrontation with Israeli forces rather than delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
“There is misnarration in the media that this is some sort of humanitarian aid mission, while I think that’s kind of flattening what it is that we are doing. Yes, there is aid. The aid that we have isn’t sufficient to the structural issues in a post 'ceasefire' Gaza,” activist Rosa Martinez, said in a clip posted by the New York chapter of the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), as he and other activists arrived at JFK International Airport in New York City.
Martinez argued that the flotilla movement is centered more on direct political action and confrontation with Israel than on delivering humanitarian supplies.
“For me, as someone who, in this juncture in history, is very wedded to direct action, I feel like directly confronting the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) at sea as we try to break this 20-year genocidal siege, is a historic responsibility,” he added.
Martinez further acknowledged that the flotilla movement aims to draw renewed media attention to Gaza amid concerns that international coverage has declined following the American-brokered ceasefire in October 2025.
“You know, engaging with the IOF directly. Putting the spotlight back on Gaza cause it has fallen off the headlines. But I also think it opens up conversations within our organizing communities as how we can expand our litany of tactics,” he concluded.
Israel has long accused international flotilla movements of prioritizing publicity campaigns over humanitarian relief efforts.
Israel unilaterally withdrew its military forces and residents from Gaza in 2005. The following year, the terrorist organization Hamas won local elections.
In 2007, Hamas violently ousted its political rival, Fatah, from Gaza and transformed the coastal enclave into a base for rocket attacks against Israeli civilian communities and cities.
Israel subsequently imposed a blockade on Gaza aimed at limiting Hamas’s military buildup, while continuing to allow civilian goods, including food and medicine, into the territory.
In 2025, the Israeli Navy intercepted another flotilla attempting to reach Gaza that included Swedish anti-Israel activist Greta Thunberg. Israeli authorities said forces discovered only a small amount of humanitarian aid onboard and dismissed the initiative as primarily a publicity effort.
“In fact, it is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) – a ‘selfie yacht’. Humanitarian aid is delivered regularly and effectively via different channels and routes,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem stated.
“The ‘selfie yacht’ of the ‘celebrities’ is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries,” the Israeli foreign ministry added.
Martinez participated in the recent Gaza flotilla that was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in the Mediterranean Sea. Several countries subsequently condemned Israel for confronting the activists in international waters.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin condemned Israel and urged the European Union to reconsider its trade ties with the Jewish state.
“It’s no longer tenable that it would be business as usual with Israel, given its scant regard for European Union citizens,” Martin argued. “The right to protest is a sacred one, within any democracy. The flotilla was in international waters and people were essentially abducted by the Israeli government on the high seas.”
Spain also condemned Israel’s actions against the flotilla activists. However, in footage filmed at Bilbao Airport, Spanish police were seen dragging activists across the airport floor and physically striking them during a separate confrontation.
Ireland and Spain have emerged among Israel’s strongest critics within the European Union.
