'For such a time as this' – Faith leaders pray over Trump as Iran conflict escalates

Prayer, Jesus and the Bible. It’s back at the White House and it has been for some time, ever since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office.

During this Holy Week, in anticipation of Easter this Sunday, Trump invited faith leaders to take part in an event celebrating Christianity. It turned into an event that not only included remarks from the president but also worship and prayer.

It comes at a crucial time as America and Israel continue to pound the Iranian regime with bombs. The military conflict is now in its fifth week.

This wasn’t just another event in the East Room. It felt like something bigger and definitely more spiritual in nature. When you step back and look at it, you start to hear a familiar phrase echoing through scripture: “For such a time as this.” And that’s exactly where Franklin Graham, the president and CEO of Samaritan's Purse, went.

Standing there, praying over the president, Graham didn’t just offer a routine blessing. He went straight to the book of Esther – drawing a direct line between ancient Persia and modern-day Iran.

Here’s what he prayed:

“Father, you tell us in the Book of Esther that the Persians, the Iranians, were wanting to kill every Jew, woman, child, and do it all in one day. But you raised up Esther to save the Jewish people. Father, we thank you. Today the Iranians, the wicked regime of this government, wants to kill every Jew and destroy them with an atomic fire. But you have raised up President Trump. You’ve raised him up for such a time as this. And Father, we pray that you'll give him victory. Father, we pray for our military – that you’d watch over, protect them. Father, we pray for the people of Iran who want freedom to be set free from these Islamic lunatics. Father, we thank you for your son, Jesus Christ, who came to this earth to take our sins, that he died and shed his blood on the cross for our sins, that he was buried, he took our sins to the grave, but you raised him to life. And Father, we thank you and we praise you and we give you the glory. Father, protect President Trump. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.”

Leave it to Franklin Graham to not sugarcoat it. Indeed, that’s a prayer rooted in biblical history, applied directly to today’s geopolitical moment – Israel, Iran, and the United States all wrapped into one.

It raises a bigger question: do these Christian faith leaders believe Trump is being positioned, like Esther, for a specific purpose in a critical moment, because that’s clearly the implication. Well, take a wild guess. The answer is an affirmative, yes.

Paula White, Trump’s longtime spiritual advisor, made that point crystal clear. She didn’t credit politics. She didn't credit strategy. She went straight to something higher. “You are here because of God and because of you,” she said, standing just feet away from the president.

For leaders here, the military conflict in Iran is surely not happenstance. Iran has been at the center of global tension for years – its threats toward Israel, its nuclear ambitions, and its hardline leadership. For many Evangelicals, this isn’t just foreign policy. It’s prophetic.

The way these Evangelical leaders see it, Trump’s presidency is not just an election result – but rather, something divinely allowed, maybe even divinely orchestrated.

At the event, President Trump himself leaned into the faith angle – especially when it comes to Israel.

“I know you’re big Israel fans, Evangelicals and Christians…I think they like Israel more than Jewish people like Israel, if you want to know the truth. It’s really true…the love for Israel is great.”

Trump clearly understands the deep connection between Evangelical Christians and Israel. After all, the Old Testament and the New Testament are linked together as one book. You don’t have Christianity without Judaism. That’s very clear from scripture.

Then you have voices like Christian Author Eric Metaxas, who was there and walked away with one clear takeaway.

“The whole experience was incredible – seeing so many faith leaders gathered together…I just praise God for this president – God’s hand is on him. Pray for him. Pray that the Lord gives him wisdom. This is a challenging time, but God is in it.”

Whether you agree or disagree with that assessment, there’s no denying this: a growing number of faith leaders see Trump through a biblical lens. Not as perfect. Not as flawless. Far from either, but as someone who may be playing a role in a much larger story.

That idea isn’t new. The Bible is full of imperfect leaders being used in pivotal moments – Cyrus, David, even Esther herself. God uses imperfect people to accomplish His perfect will.

Ultimately, when it comes to Iran, or any world event for that matter, it comes down to God’s timing, and as the scripture says, “For such a time as this.”

At the White House this week, we saw that exact biblical concept play out with a president who is in office for exactly this moment.
