Officials in Jordan are signaling to Israel that they are interested in renewing contacts on the regional “Prosperity” project, under which Israel will sell Jordan 200 million cubic meters (7.1 billion cubic feet) of desalinated water and purchase from Jordan 600 megawatts of electricity produced by a solar farm that the United Arab Emirates will build in the kingdom.

This was reported on Thursday morning by a source familiar with the details to Kan News' Arab Affairs correspondent, Roee Kais.

In recent months, Jordanian water-sector professionals have recommended to the government in Amman to restart the project in light of the water-supply shortage the kingdom is suffering.

In November 2023, Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, announced in an interview that, from Jordan’s perspective, the project was suspended until further notice due to Israel’s war in Gaza.

Now that the active fighting has stopped, it appears that Jordan, behind the scenes, is probing the Israeli side about advancing it again, due to Jordan’s water crisis, which remains unresolved.

The “Prosperity” project – also backed by the United States during the Biden administration – began moving forward in 2021, inspired by the signing of the Abraham Accords the previous year and initiated by the regional organization “EcoPeace.”
