A video showing stadium staff asking a fan to surrender an Israeli flag during Monday night's FIFA World Cup match between Iran and New Zealand in Los Angeles, California, has sparked widespread criticism online after nearby spectators displaying Palestinian flags were reportedly allowed to keep them.

The footage, widely shared on social media, fueled accusations that FIFA and stadium officials applied flag-display rules inconsistently. Critics argued that the decision unfairly singled out the Israeli flag while permitting other national and political symbols to remain visible in the stands.

The video appears to show ushers telling the fan that his Israeli flag was creating a "safety issue" and that only flags representing the teams on the field were permitted during the match.

The fan responded by pointing to nearby Palestinian flags and questioning why they were allowed to remain.

“Why don’t you tell them to take down their flag?” the fan said, according to Israel Hayom. “This feels like antisemitism. When you take that flag down, I’ll take mine down.”

The ushers replied that they were merely following instructions from their superiors and that the decision was not theirs to make. The fan later handed over the flag after being told it would be returned to him.

The video quickly spread across social media, generating a wave of criticism directed at FIFA and stadium officials. Many commenters argued that the organization's rules had been enforced unevenly.

Prominent American sports personality Martin Lieberman also criticized the stadium's stated "safety" concerns, saying he found the explanation difficult to accept.

Reports from the match indicated that other Israeli flags remained visible in the stadium, alongside Palestinian flags, flags associated with Iran's current government, and flags bearing the Lion and Sun symbol used by the Iranian monarchy before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

FIFA has previously attempted to prohibit the Lion and Sun symbol at matches involving Iran, though enforcement has proven difficult.

The incident also drew attention to other reports of flag removals during the tournament. According to social media posts and media reports, flags from countries including Japan, the Netherlands and England have been removed at various venues across the United States, prompting further accusations of inconsistent enforcement.

FIFA maintains rules governing the display of flags, banners and posters at its events. However, the tournament's host nation, the United States, has strong legal protections for free expression, creating challenges for tournament organizers seeking to restrict displays they believe pose safety or security concerns.

Political activism has surfaced repeatedly during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with some groups seeking to use the tournament's global audience to draw attention to causes unrelated to the matches themselves.

Monday's game was Iran's opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and ended in a 2-2 draw. Following the match, the Iranian team and coaching staff returned to their training base in Mexico.
