Two Jewish men were stabbed with a knife and seriously wounded in London on Wednesday, in the latest of a series of antisemitic attacks in the British capital.

The victims, one elderly and the other in his 30s, were treated on the scene before being rushed to a hospital. The Metropolitan Police later described their condition as “stable.”

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Israel strongly criticized the British government after the attack, charging that “weakness gaslights one antisemitic attack after another in London. Words are not enough to confront this scourge.”

“We demand and expect action by the British Government to protect the Jews of England and bring antisemites to justice,” the PMO stated on behalf of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the police, the 45-year-old male attacker also tried to stab police officers during the attack. “Specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing are leading the investigation and working with the Metropolitan Police to establish the full circumstances and any links to terrorism,” the police said.

Footage circulating online showed the terrorist stabbing a man wearing a kippah in the heavily Jewish London neighborhood of Golders Green. Another video showed police officers, apparently only armed with tasers, as well as a bystander with a stick, beating and finally detaining the terrorist.

The local Jewish emergency response organization, Shomrim, was the first to report the attack, saying that its members had responded and detained the suspect before the police arrived and arrested him. Shomrim added that the Jewish Hatzola ambulance service was the first on scene to treat the victims, as well as the attacker.

The stabbing incident took place close to the site where several men had committed an arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances parked outside a synagogue earlier this month.

According to the head of the Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, the suspect had a history of serious violence and mental health issues, while counterterror chief Lawrence Taylor confirmed that the attack was designated as terrorism.

Local shouted “resign” and “shame on you” at Rowley as he visited the scene of the attack, with the London-born former Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy remarking, “The mood in Britain’s Jewish community has shifted from frustration to anger. They are being hunted, and they are furious.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “The antisemitic attack in Golders Green is utterly appalling. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain. Thank you to Shomrim, Hatzola and the police for acting swiftly. Those responsible will be brought to justice.”

However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said that Starmer’s government had lost control, citing “attacks on synagogues, Jewish institutions, community ambulances and now Jews targeted in Golders Green.”

Starmer’s statements “are no substitute for confronting the roots of antisemitism festering across United Kingdom. British Jews should not need security patrols and emergency volunteers to live openly as Jews. Enough words. The UK must act decisively and urgently,” the foreign ministry added.

Britain’s Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis agreed, emphasizing that “words of condemnation are no longer sufficient.”

“This must be a moment that demands meaningful action from every institution, every community, every leader, and every decent person in our country. This is a hatred that we must face down together,” he wrote on 𝕏.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is visiting Spain to “discuss Gaza” and other topics with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, stated that “there must be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society.”

Speaking during his state visit to the United States, King Charles III said he was “deeply concerned” over the attack.

“His Majesty is being kept fully informed and is naturally deeply concerned, in particular about the impact for the Jewish community,” the palace stated, adding the king’s “thoughts and prayers are with the two individuals who were injured,” and that he “offers his heartfelt gratitude to those who so selflessly rushed to their aid.”
