Israel reprimands Norway's ambassador after PM marks 'Kristallnacht' at anti-Israel event
Israel's Foreign Ministry blasts 'distortion of Holocaust remembrance'
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs reprimanded the Norwegian ambassador to Israel on Monday, following the participation of Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, in an event organized by anti-Israel groups that openly call for the elimination of the State of Israel.
According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the head of the political bureau made it clear to the ambassador that “the Norwegian government’s policy toward Israel fuels antisemitism in the country,” and strongly condemned the prime minister’s participation in a ceremony “that distorted the memory of the Holocaust and turned the anniversary of Kristallnacht into a weapon against the Jewish state, its citizens, and the Jewish people as a whole.”
The Norwegian prime minister attended the event despite explicit requests from the leadership of the Jewish community in Norway not to do so, due to concerns that the event would become a platform “encouraging antisemitism – deeply troubling in its insensitivity and moral distortion.”
The Foreign Ministry added that Israel expects European countries “to demonstrate moral integrity, reject antisemitism in all its forms, oppose historical distortion, and stand firmly against attempts to criminalize or delegitimize the State of Israel.”
