Israel has informed the United States that it will not contribute funding to President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, the Kan News program “HaBoker HaZeh” reported Sunday morning on Reshet Bet.

Israeli Cabinet member and Strategic Affairs Minister Ze'ev Elkin addressed the issue in an interview with Aryeh Golan on the program and confirmed the report. “We will not give money to the Board of Peace—there is no reason to. We were attacked, and there is no reason for us to finance the reconstruction in Gaza,” he said.

Countries that joined the board were asked to contribute to its operating costs, and nations such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have already announced they will each donate more than $1 billion. President Trump announced last night that board members have raised approximately $5 billion.

According to a government source, the decision also helped on the domestic political front regarding ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. The two had expressed reservations about joining a board alongside Turkey and Qatar, and have so far remained silent on the matter since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s participation.

Earlier this week, Kan News reported that Qatar had considered paying the highest sum among member states for Gaza’s reconstruction in order to increase its influence. Each member state of the board is expected to contribute about $1 billion to the overall project, from rebuilding the Strip to financing the peacekeeping force.
