U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee reaffirmed the “unbreakable bond” between the United States and Israel while speaking at the JNS International Policy Summit in Jerusalem on Sunday.

Ambassador Huckabee joked about President Donald Trump’s infamously unpredictable social media posts, including using social media to fire people from his administration.

“I checked Trump’s social media to make sure this was not my last speech in Israel,” Huckabee joked at the start of his remarks.

“He typically fires people in the middle of the night by way of social media, so I wanted to make sure there was a reason to come,” he said to laughs. “So far so good.”

In his speech to the gathered policymakers, journalists, and supporters of Israel, Huckabee spoke seriously about the president’s support for the Jewish State, acknowledging “an enormous level of anxiety about the relationship between the United States and Israel.”

“The one thing that I’ve always heard him say, always, and I’ve always seen him do, is that America has an unbreakable bond with the State of Israel, and I trust that he means what he says,” Huckabee said. He spoke of Trump’s past actions in Israel’s favor, such as declaring Jerusalem as the capital, moving the embassy to Jerusalem, and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, as proof of the president’s consistent support.

Besides attempting to calm Israeli fears over U.S. actions around the Memorandum of Understanding, Ambassador Huckabee also spoke of America’s debt to the Jewish people and the Judeo-Christian foundations of western civilization.

“It is upon the Jewish foundation that Christianity was formed, and upon the Jewish and Judeo-Christian foundation, Western civilization was formed,” Huckabee stated, “and without that, there would not be an America. It is as simple as that.”

“Americans, whether they understand it or not, need to be grateful to God for the Jewish people and the foundation upon which freedom and the sanctity of the individual was founded,” Huckabee said regarding those values, “because that is what separates our values from the values of totalitarianism and dictatorship.”

Huckabee also urged Israeli’s to be patient with Trump, saying the president has promised that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon. He said the Iranian threat is not just directed at Israel, but also targets the U.S.

“Earlier this year, when it became apparent that the Iranians were intent on continuing what has been a 47-year threat against us, when I say us, I mean you and the United States,” Huckabee said regarding the join threat, “It's always been ‘Death to Israel, Death to America,’ Let's be clear.”

The U.S. ambassador said that “The Iranian threat is best served when the spigot is turned off at the source and no more forces flow to Hezbollah, to Hamas, or the Houthis.”

Huckabee continued, saying, “if we can get peace, wonderful. But even this afternoon, the president has issued very clear understandings to the Iranians that if they think that the United States is going to fold and collapse and let them have their way, he has made it clear what he will do.”

Huckabee’s comments come amid stark concern in Israel and even public disagreement over the terms of the MoU, which the U.S. and Iran signed in order to begin a 60-day period of negotiations designed to end the war and remove the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapon.

They also come amid increasingly public disagreements between Israeli and U.S. leadership, including between President Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
