60 wounded, 300 damaged homes: Iranian missile impact wreaks havoc on northern Israeli Bedouin town

Almost half of the wounded are children suffering from injuries from flying glass amid shock wave

Some 58 people were wounded when an Iranian missile hit close to several homes in the town of Zarzir, some 20 km (12 miles) east of Haifa in the central Galilee, Magen David Adom emergency services announced.

Among them, three people suffered moderate injuries while the rest were lightly wounded, mostly by glass shards flying around amid the shock wave. These included at least 27 children.

Medical personnel also evacuated an additional 15 people suffering from acute anxiety to hospitals for treatment.

The missile hit close to several houses, demolishing those nearby and damaging some 300 buildings overall. A nearby horse stable was destroyed, and a foal was found dead.

The head of the Zarzir Local Council, Atef Ghrifat, told Ynet News that one of the houses is “completely destroyed” and “nearly 300 homes were damaged by the blast wave. Whoever was inside a safe room survived; whoever was outside was injured.”

Zarzir is a local council of about 9,000 residents, mostly members of the Bedouin Mazarib, Ghrifat, Haib, Jawamis and Eyadat tribes and their respective villages. Many residents enlist in the IDF.

The director-general of Magen David Adom told Channel 12 News that a preliminary inquiry showed that some were wounded due to a safe-room window that was not hermetically sealed. He added that the intensity of the shrapnel fallout from the impact was very high and a large crater formed at the site.

“I didn’t imagine I would find the children alive,” recounted Khaled Ghrifat, a local resident who spoke to Ynet News. “I wouldn’t wish on my enemies what I went through. I saw my wife flying in the air.”

The impact came during the first of three waves of ballistic missile strikes targeting northern Israel, around 1:50 a.m.

Two more strikes followed shortly after, complicating search and rescue efforts.

“I woke up from the siren and didn’t manage to reach the safe room,” said Ghrifat. “The five children were in the safe room, and suddenly there was a loud boom. Everything was smoke, there was no electricity, and I started searching for the children in the dark.”

“I heard the children screaming, and for five minutes I couldn’t find them. Suddenly, my wife opened the safe-room door and literally flew into the air. She was bleeding, and we started searching for the children together. Two of the children have special needs, and it was difficult to locate them. I started shouting ‘Help!’ from the window, and only then did we find the children. My wife took many blows to her back from metal rods and glass.”

“There is enormous damage on the balcony, the ceiling collapsed, and there is destruction in the living room and the kitchen as well,” he said. “The television flew from its place; nothing remained. Damage was caused to our two cars; everything flew and shattered like biscuits. All the windows blew out, all the children’s bedrooms were destroyed.”

The Israel Police summed up the event: “Upon receiving the report, dozens of officers from the northern district, fighters of the Israel Border Police, and bomb-disposal experts were dispatched to the scene, and together with firefighting and rescue forces evacuated civilians from nearby homes and transferred them to medical teams, who evacuated about 60 wounded people with light and moderate injuries.”
