Zelenskyy presses US to reinstate Russian oil sanctions amid ceasefire, says Moscow 'played the Americans'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy questioned whether the United States will reimpose sanctions on Russian oil following a ceasefire in the Middle East, suggesting the answer could reveal why restrictions were lifted in the first place.

“If sanctions on Russian oil have been lifted because of the war in the Middle East, will the U.S. sanctions be reimposed now that there is a ceasefire? I think that an answer to this question will expose the reason for lifting sanctions in the first place.” Zelenskyy told Italy’s Rai Radio 1 on Thursday.

He also accused Russia of misleading Washington, claiming that Moscow “played the Americans again – played the President of the United States” by overplaying the role their oil supplies play in keeping oil markets stable. He argued that reinstating sanctions would be “fair,” but warned that failure to do so would raise further questions about U.S. policy.
