US lauds ceasefire in Syria after gov't forces overrun large parts of Kurdish-held territory
U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, praised the ceasefire between the Syrian government and the majority-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that was signed after the government's army overran and captured large parts of Syria's northeastern provinces, which had been controlled by the SDF with US support for around a decade.
Barrack lauded both parties for their "constructive efforts in reaching today’s ceasefire agreement, paving the way for renewed dialogue and cooperation toward a unified Syria."
"Two great Syrian leaders, driven by the shared vision of liberating their country and people from tyranny, have now come together to forge a brighter future for all Syrians."
"President al-Sharaa has affirmed that the Kurds are an integral part of Syria, and the United States looks forward to the seamless integration of our historic partner in the fight against ISIS with the Global Coalition’s newest member, as we press forward in the enduring battle against terrorism," Barrack said.
