Russia & China veto UN Security Council resolution to reopen Strait of Hormuz
Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution calling to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with the council members voting 11 in favor, two against and two abstentions.
The resolution had been progressively watered down in order to enable the two powers to abstain, rather than veto it. An initial proposal brought by Bahrain would have called on countries to use “all necessary means”, which can include military action, to reopen the strategic waterway.
The resolution vetoed by Russia and China only “strongly encourages states interested in the use of commercial maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz to coordinate efforts, defensive in nature, commensurate with the circumstances, to contribute to ensuring the safety and security of navigation across the Strait of Hormuz.”
