President Herzog slams gov't's decision to disregard Supreme Court ruling
Israel's President Isaac Herzog slammed the government for vowing to disregard a Supreme Court ruling earlier on Sunday, a precedent that could potentially set up a constitutional crisis.
"Statements of noncompliance with Supreme Court rulings harm the core of unity in the people. I have already clarified this, and I will repeat it again and again - noncompliance with a court ruling is a red line that must not be crossed under any circumstances," Herzog warned.
The government had announced that it would not recognize decisions taken by a broadcasting regulatory body called "Council of the Second Authority," despite the court's ruling that the council can make legal decisions even without the legally prescribed two-thirds quorum of members, after several members recently resigned.
The court had accused Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi of “deliberate obstruction and paralysis of the council’s operations.”
