Pakistan sees itself in 'open war' with Afghanistan
Pakistan sees itself in an “open war” with neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared this morning. He added that the nuclear power’s patience had run out after what Islamabad described as a cross-border attack, the Associated Press reported.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry urged both countries to halt strikes and resolve their differences, with Russian media reporting that the Kremlin would consider mediating if requested.
On Thursday, Taliban authorities announced a large-scale military operation along the border with Pakistan, in response to Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan about a week earlier. Three weeks ago, a suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in Islamabad killed dozens, with the Islamic State claiming responsibility. Last November, a dozen people died in a suicide attack near Pakistan’s Supreme Court that attributed to Taliban operatives in Afghanistan and India.
