Knesset advances bill empowering justice minister to appoint special prosecutor to investigate attorney general
The Knesset on Wednesday approved in a preliminary vote a bill that would allow Justice Minister Yariv Levin to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the attorney general.
The proposal, introduced by lawmakers from the Religious Zionism party, stipulates that if police receive information suggesting possible criminal conduct by the attorney general, the state prosecutor, or their representatives, the case would be forwarded to the justice minister. He would then be empowered to appoint an independent prosecutor with full investigative and prosecutorial authority.
