Italy summons Israeli amb as Ben Gvir flotilla footage sparks condemnation
Footage showing Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir parading an Israeli flag over handcuffed Gaza flotilla activists who were face down on the floor prompted condemnation from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday.
“The images of the Israeli minister Ben Gvir are unacceptable. It is inadmissible that these demonstrators, including many Italian citizens, are subjected to this treatment that violates human dignity,” Meloni posted on X.
She said Italy was working to secure the release of its citizens and called for an apology over the treatment of the activists and what she described as “total contempt” toward Rome’s requests.
Israel dismissed the flotilla as “nothing more than a PR stunt in the service of Hamas,” and maintained that its blockade complies with international maritime law.
