Israeli government advances non-state Oct. 7 inquiry bill amid protests by bereaved families
The Knesset on Wednesday approved in a preliminary vote a government-backed bill to establish a commission of inquiry into the October 7 failures. The proposal passed 53–48, with one abstention.
Ahead of the vote, families from the “October Council” protested outside the homes of several ministers, and later held a press conference at the Knesset. Bereaved parents denounced the proposed commission as a “whitewash committee,” arguing it lacks independence and is designed to shield political leaders from responsibility.
Tensions escalated in the plenum when bill sponsor MK Ariel Kallner took the podium. Bereaved families in the gallery turned their backs in protest, joined by opposition lawmakers.
