Israeli farmers nationwide protest dairy reform that would slash import tariffs
Farmers and dairy producers are protesting this morning (Monday) at intersections across the country against Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's dairy reform.
Dror Korlander, a dairy farmer from Moshav Beit Hillel, said: “My fear is that the life's work of my grandparents, who fled Europe, will collapse because of imports from Europe. It's absurd. This protest is just the beginning.”
Moshe Davidovich, head of the Mateh Asher Regional Council and chairman of the Conflict Zone Forum, expressed at the protest at the Beit HaEmek Intersection: “After two years of war —including a year and a half of heavy fighting in the North— our farmers continued to work under fire, protect the land and provide food for the country, even when they had no support and were given no safety net. Now of all times, the government has decided to advance a terrible move in the dairy industry, a move that endangers local agriculture and directly harms the communities along the border. This decision is out of touch with the reality on the ground, and we cannot accept it."
