Israel is trying to prevent Iran from opening a front from Syria
Recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria are aimed at preventing Iran from opening a new front in the war with Hamas, according to Joel Rayburn, director of the American Center for Levant Studies.
Posting to X, formerly Twitter, Rayburn wrote: “Repeated Israeli strikes to disable Damascus and Aleppo airports are, to my mind, a strong indication that 1) the Iranian regime is trying to move strategic weapons to or via Syria to open a northern front and 2) the Israelis are determined to preempt that.”
Deputy Dir.-Gen. Joshua Zarka, who is the head of Foreign Ministry Strategic Affairs, responded with a tweet of his own: “1. They are. 2. We are.”
Israel has repeatedly carried out airstrikes in Syria against Iranian forces attempting to transfer weapons to Iranian forces and Hezbollah.
During the most recent airstrike, an Iranian Mahan Air flight had to return to Iran after the runway was destroyed.
Mahan Air, despite being a civilian airline, has transported weapons, Iranian military forces and supplies for both Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the past.
