Israel stops transfer of NIS 300 million from war funds to ultra-Orthodox schools
The Israeli cabinet decided to cancel a planned vote about the transfer of NIS 300 million (approximately $77.3 million) to ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools out of coalition funds that were redirected to the war effort, Israeli media reported.
The vote on Sunday morning was canceled after Benny Gantz, a Knesset member who sits on the emergency war cabinet, spoke out against it.
“The transfer of coalition funds for any purpose other than strengthening the residents of the south and the north, bereaved families and the families of the abducted, alongside various other war efforts, is neither economically nor morally correct at this time,” read a statement issued by the National Unity party, which Gantz leads.
After the start of the war, the government froze the discretionary coalition funds that were meant to fulfill political promises to its various constituent parties and re-allocated them to the war effort.
