Israel launches long-awaited Gush Dan metro project
A ceremonial cornerstone-laying event was held Thursday at the Segula Junction in Petah Tikva to mark the launch of the Gush Dan metro project.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that an idea discussed for decades — including by Israel’s founding prime minister David Ben-Gurion — is now moving toward implementation, declaring that “the metro era is arriving in Gush Dan.”
The project is estimated to cost between NIS 150–200 billion ($40–54 billion) and is expected to serve about 2 million passengers daily, connect more than 20 local authorities, and significantly transform public transportation in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Originally scheduled for completion in 2032, the project is now not expected to be finished before 2040 due to repeated delays.
