Israel introduces new procedures at Ben Gurion Airport after recent flight security breaches
Israel’s Airports Authority announced Thursday a change to boarding pass inspection procedures at Ben Gurion Airport, following two recent incidents in which passengers managed to board flights without valid tickets.
Under the new rules, boarding passes will be checked already at the initial security screening stage. Previously, there were several points between terminal entry and boarding where passengers were not required to present a ticket. The authority said that, gradually, passengers will now be asked to show boarding passes at additional stages where this was not previously required.
The move follows an incident in October in which a 13-year-old boy boarded an El Al flight without security screening, passport control or a boarding pass, and a similar case this week involving a 19-year-old who infiltrated an Austrian Airlines flight.
The Airports Authority warned that during the initial rollout of the new procedure, waiting times may increase and queues at certain checkpoints could be longer than usual.
