Iranian regime shuts down internet nationwide as wave of protests intensifies

The Iranian regime shut down the internet across the country on Thursday evening, while protesters set fire to pictures of government symbols, as demonstrations continue to spread across the country.

Reports from Iran indicate that the internet shutdown occurred after two Revolutionary Guards members were killed in a “clash with separatist forces” in the city of Kermanshah. Network data suggest the shutdown is nationwide, following a series of strict digital censorship measures imposed by the regime. Phone lines have also been disconnected.

Large numbers of protesters took to the streets in cities across Iran on Thursday. In Tehran, demonstrators gathered in the Namak neighborhood, chanting “Pahlavi is coming back,” a reference to the exiled crown prince who called on citizens to continue protesting against the ayatollahs’ regime. Protests were also reported in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, and in other regions. In northern Iran, demonstrators were filmed removing a billboard featuring Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
