Haredi leaders slam 'violent' police action against protesters blocking streets during morning rush hour
Haredi leaders alleged the police used excessive violence against hundreds of protesters who blocked central highways across central Israel this morning during rush hour to demonstrate against the arrest of draft dodgers.
Shas chair Aryeh Deri claimed the police was being more violent than during anti-government protests, calling on National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to “get up now and stop the police violence against Torah scholars.”
The criticism focused on violent clashes between dozens of Haredi protesters and the police on Highway 4 near Bnei Brak. Police confirmed that the street was reopened after five protesters were arrested, confirming the use of “dispersal measures” to clear the crowd.
Footage showed the use of stun grenades and officers dragging protesters off the highway, in some cases tearing the clothes of the protesters while doing so.
