Deputy attorney general warns cabinet of “constitutional crisis” over draft law dispute
A sharp dispute broke out at Sunday’s cabinet meeting over a High Court ruling on drafting ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students.
The court had ordered the government to adopt a policy by today on enforcing draft orders, including possible economic and civil measures. Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs said the government intends to advance the draft law, describing it as a gradual social process.
Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon warned the government is violating a binding court ruling, calling the situation a “constitutional crisis.”
Amid the standoff, ultra-Orthodox parties have again threatened to back dissolving the Knesset if the draft law does not advance, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged coalition partners to avoid elections and move quickly to complete the legislation.
