Colombian President's 'Heil Hitler' post draws condemnation from lawmakers in 14 Latin American countries
Twenty-four lawmakers from 14 Latin American countries condemned Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s use of the phrase “Heil Hitler” earlier this week.
Petro posted the phrase on X in response to an opinion column titled “Colombia Does Not Need More Rhetoric; It Needs Order, Authority, and Economic Freedom.”
“The use of references to Nazism must not become a rhetorical tool to discredit political or ideological positions,” said the statement published by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) on Monday, adding that such comparisons trivialize the crimes of the Nazi regime and distort Holocaust memory.
The statement’s signatories, participants in the Coalition of Latin American Legislators Against Antisemitism, included representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay.
