Bank of Israel opposes draft-exemption law: “Sanctions have low effectiveness”

The Bank of Israel on Thursday issued an opinion strongly criticizing the current draft-exemption bill for Haredim, warning that its proposed enlistment targets are too low and its economic sanctions too weak to have any real impact.

According to the opinion, adding 20,000 Haredi conscripts to the regular army — enabling a reduction in reserve duty — would lower Israel’s long-term annual economic burden by at least 9 billion shekels. If Haredi employment rises substantially as a result of enlistment, the long-term income gain could reach up to 14 billion shekels.
