Australian PM announces royal commission into Sydney Hanukkah Massacre on Bondi Beach
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced this morning the establishment of a royal commission to investigate the Hanukkah massacre in Sydney. The attack, which took place during the lighting of the first Hanukkah candle at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025, claimed the lives of 15 people.
Albanese announced that retired High Court judge Virginia Bell would lead the royal commission. He stated that the commission will look into the shooting, as well as issues of antisemitism and social cohesion in Australia. It is expected to report its findings by December 2026.
“This Royal Commission is the right format, the right duration and the right terms of reference to deliver the right outcome for our national unity and our national security,” Albanese said.
Albanese initially opposed calls to establish a royal commission, arguing that the process would take years.
His stance drew criticism from Jewish organizations and the victims’ families, who urged him to reconsider. “I’ve taken the time to reflect, to meet with leaders in the Jewish community, and most importantly, I’ve met with many of the families of victims and survivors of that horrific attack,” Albanese said.
