Approximately 20% of Israelis live in poverty as child poverty ranks 2nd-highest in OECD

Israel’s National Insurance Institute released a poverty report today showing that nearly two million people nationwide live below the poverty line, including 880,000 children and more than 150,000 seniors.

According to the report, one in three children in Israel experiences food insecurity, ranking Israel second in child poverty among OECD countries, behind Costa Rica.

Poverty is highest among Arab and Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) households, with 37.6% of Arab households and 32.8% of Haredi households living below the poverty line. Together, these demographic groups account for about 65.1% of Israel’s population living in poverty.
