A major achievement: Israeli director's new film to compete at the Tokyo Film Festival

Renowned Israeli director Amos Gitai will compete at the 2025 Tokyo International Film Festival with his new and intriguing film, Golem in Pompeii, Kan News first reported on Monday.
The cinematic work offers a contemporary interpretation of the mythological Jewish figure of the Golem.
The film was shot in France and Italy with an international cast that includes Irène Jacob, Menashe Noy, Micha Leskow, Minas Karavani, Bahira Abbasi, Laurent Naouri, Anne-Laure Ségalat, and Pini Mittelman.
Gitai’s film draws inspiration from the writings of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Virginia Woolf, and explores the ongoing struggles of minority groups in modern society.
Participation in the official competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival – taking place amid a cultural boycott of Israel – marks another impressive milestone in Gitai’s long international career, as he continues to represent Israel with distinction worldwide.
This is Gitai’s 12th film to be accepted into a major international film festival. Last summer, his film Why War was screened at the Venice Film Festival.
Six months earlier, his film It’s Not Too Late Yet was shown at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival will open on Oct. 27 and run until Nov. 5, 2025.
