US warns Hamas against attacks on Gazan civilians, views it as 'violation of agreement'

Hamas rejects US statement, accuses State Department of spreading ‘misleading Israeli propaganda’

The U.S. State Department announced in a press release on Saturday that it had received “credible reports indicating an imminent ceasefire violation by Hamas against the people of Gaza.”

The State Department said it had informed the “guarantor nations” of the Gaza peace agreement of the threat.

“This planned attack against Palestinian civilians would constitute a direct and grave violation of the ceasefire agreement and undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts,” the statement said. “The guarantors demand Hamas uphold its obligations under the ceasefire terms.”

The State Department also gave a warning to Hamas, saying, “Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire.”

“The United States and the other guarantors remain resolute in our commitment to ensuring the safety of civilians, maintaining calm on the ground, and advancing peace and prosperity for the people of Gaza and the region as a whole,” the statement concluded.

While the exact nature of the threat was not indicated in the statement, multiple reports in recent days have claimed that Hamas is attacking civilians in Gaza in an attempt to regain control over areas where it had been weakened by fighting with the IDF. Reports indicate that Hamas is attacking and killing anyone who expresses disagreement with the terror group or its war effort against Israel.

The terror group has attacked many people, including children, whose families are accused of “collaborating” or “spying.”

President Trump himself warned Hamas in a post to Truth Social on Friday that if the killing continues, Hamas itself will be targeted.

The terror group rejected the United States' assessment of the situation, claiming that “the police forces in Gaza, with extensive assistance from residents, are fulfilling their national duty by pursuing militias and holding them accountable according to clear laws, in order to protect residents and property.”

Hamas attempted to blame Israel for provoking unrest through its support of militias.

“It is the occupation authorities [Israel] that established, armed, and financed criminal militias that carried out acts of murder and kidnapping and stole aid trucks,” it claimed.

On Sunday morning, Hamas released its own statement, disputing the State Department’s claims.

“Hamas rejects the allegations contained in the U.S. State Department's statement and categorically denies the allegations leveled against it regarding an ‘imminent attack’ or a ‘violation of the ceasefire agreement,’” the Hamas statement read. “These false allegations are fully consistent with misleading Israeli propaganda and provide cover for the occupation's continued crimes and systematic aggression against our people.”

Arab analysts have disputed Hamas’ explanation, saying Hamas has never been sincere about disarming.

Hamas leadership in Doha, Qatar, has also said that contrary to the terms agreed to by Israel, which called for Hamas’ disarmament, the terror group will not give up its weapons.

Hamas political bureau member Mohammed Nazzal told Reuters that he could not give a “yes or no” answer to the question of “will Hamas give up its weapons,” saying the group needs the weapons to “maintain security control.”
