Western powers seek UN resolution for international force in Gaza

Paris announced on Thursday that France, the United States, and the United Kingdom are jointly drafting a UN Security Council resolution aimed at deploying an international military force to stabilize the post-war Gaza Strip. Although the force would operate under a UN mandate, it would not be run by the United Nations itself and would include troops from Muslim and Arab states.

French Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pascal Confavreux stressed that the countries seek an UN-backed mission based on international law for stabilizing Gaza.

“France is working closely with its partners on the establishment of such an international mission, which must be formalized through the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution,” Confavreux stated.

“Discussions, notably with the Americans and the British, are ongoing to propose this resolution in the coming days,” he added. An UN-mandated delegation will reportedly facilitate coordination and cooperation with other countries around the world.

Earlier this month, France hosted talks with European and Arab nations concerning post-war Gaza and an international peacekeeping force.

Advisors revealed that the Trump administration is seeking troops from multiple countries, including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Qatar and Azerbaijan. The advisors, under condition of anonymity, said there are about two dozen American troops in the region tasked with facilitating the mission through “coordination and oversight.” In addition, Italy has reportedly expressed interest in contributing to the international force in Gaza.

In his address to the UN General Assembly in New York last month, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto offered to deploy some 20,000 troops to the Gaza Strip as part of a UN-mandated peace mission.

"If and when the UN, the Security Council, and this General Assembly decide, Indonesia is ready to deploy 20,000 or even more of our sons and daughters to establish peace in Gaza or elsewhere. In Ukraine, Sudan, Libya –wherever peace needs to be established, wherever peace needs to be defended," Subianto stated.

The Indonesian president also vowed to normalize relations with Israel after the two-state solution is implemented.

"Indonesia once again reiterates its commitment to the two-state solution of the Palestine problem. Only this will lead to peace. We must guarantee statehood for Palestine," Subianto said, adding that the international community would back "all guarantees for the security of Israel."

Addressing the British Parliament on Tuesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer assessed that it would take some time to establish an international force in Gaza.

“The terms of reference are still being drawn up. There is a United Nations Security Council resolution on the establishment of the force – or I hope there will be – but the wider terms of reference are not yet agreed,” Starmer said.

Although the ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organization remains in place, it is on shaky ground as Hamas has so far refused to disarm and has failed to return the bodies of all remaining hostages.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that he would consider giving Israel the greenlight to resume military operations against Hamas if the group continues to defy the disarmament terms outlined in the Gaza agreement.

“Israel will return to those streets as soon as I say the word. If Israel could go in and knock the crap out of them, they’d do that,” Trump warned.
