Israeli team secures 6th place at International Mathematical Olympiad

The Israeli National Mathematics Team have secured a respectable 6th place in the International Mathematic Olympiad, which was held this year in Australia during the period July 10 – July 20.
The Israeli team, which competed against 639 students from 110 countries around the world, secured the Jewish state’s best result ever in the prestigious global competition.
The 12th grader Israeli gold medalist Eithan Ginzaid from Petach Tikva, expressed the sentiment of the Israeli team in an interview with The Jerusalem Post.
“I felt immense pride and a great honor to represent the State of Israel at the International Mathematical Olympiad, especially during this period we are in. I had the opportunity to meet and connect with people from all over the world who, just like me, love mathematics,” Ginzaid said.
Other Israeli gold medalists in the competition included 11th grader Shahar Blumentzvaig from Modi’in, 12th grader Raz Dvora from Rehovot, and 11th grader Yotam Nudnik, also from Rehovot. Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kisch hailed the Israeli team’s historic achievement.
“Within one week, Israel’s students reminded the world – and ourselves – what’s possible when an education system believes in excellence and nurtures it consistently,” Kisch stated.
He further noted that the Israeli team "set a new benchmark with four gold medals and a record-breaking ranking – an achievement unmatched since Israel began participating in the Olympiad.”
Kisch attributed Israel’s impressive 6th place "not only [to] extraordinary students... but a clear educational vision, a strong partnership between the Education Ministry, the Future Scientists Center, and the Weizmann Institute, and above all, a deep commitment to giving our students the tools to break boundaries.”
"This is not just a week of success – rather the forward movement of an entire system,” the minister concluded.
Yarom Ariav, Chairman of the Maimonides Fund’s Future Scientists Center, echoed similar sentiments, praising Israel’s placement as "an historic and inspiring achievement that places Israel at the forefront on the stage of global mathematics.”
Prof. Alon Chen, President of the prestigious Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, near Tel Aviv, called the Israeli students’ achievement "truly outstanding.” He emphasized that the achievement constitutes "a testament to the talent, hard work, and learning spirit of our youth, and to the tremendous potential they hold.”
Prof. Chen concluded by stressing that these achievements among young students "go far beyond medals – they are milestones pointing to a future where Israel continues to lead, innovate, and shape the global stage.”
Israel has previously won medals at other prestigious international competitions.
In July 2024, Israeli students won 11 Olympic medals in mathematics and physics at the International Mathematical Olympiad in the United Kingdom and the European Physics Olympiad in the country of Georgia.
At the time, Israeli Ministry of Education Director-General Meir Shimoni welcomed the achievements.
“I congratulate the wonderful students, and the education teams and their families who supported them and accompanied them all along the way. These students are the future generation of Israeli science and development, which has a huge impact on the face of the world,” Shimoni said.
