'His commander said he was the best soldier in the unit – hours later, he was fighting for his life'

Staff Sergeant Amit Cohen, a 19-year-old Golani fighter from Holon, was killed yesterday in an operational accident in Gaza, when an IDF explosive detonated in the building he was in, in Khan Yunis. Amit’s grandfather, Gabi Hazai, was interviewed this morning (Tuesday) on the "Kalman-Liberman" program on Kan Reshet Bet and spoke about the brave soldier he was.
"Amit was determined to enlist in Golani. They wanted to assign him elsewhere, but he refused to be transferred. A week later, he received a summons for Golani and boarded the bus. He said: ‘Either Golani or nothing,’” his grandfather recounted.
He shared that since the beginning of the war, Amit had served in Lebanon and then returned to Gaza, and there, "bereavement never ceased." He said with sorrow: “Every morning I woke up and waited for the news. I know he wasn’t afraid, but death was present.”
Finally, his grandfather and grandmother shared through tears: “Yesterday morning, his commander wrote about him, ‘The best soldier in the unit.’ Hours later, he died—and that same commander is now fighting for his life.”
Staff Sergeant Amit Cohen will be laid to rest today at 6:00 p.m. at the military cemetery in Holon.
