Argentina voices disappointment with Israel over disputed Falkland Islands

Against the backdrop of growing diplomatic isolation, even Argentina – one of Israel’s strongest allies – is expressing disappointment. According to a Kan Reshet Bet report on Sunday morning, during internal discussions between senior officials from Argentina and their Israeli counterparts, Argentinians voiced deep disappointment after discovering that a private Israeli company is raising funds to promote oil drilling in the Falkland Islands, which Argentina considers to be under its sovereignty.
Argentina expects steps to be taken by Israel regarding this issue, especially after it had supported Israel in international institutions and backed its actions.
Argentina claims sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, which have been under British control since the 19th century. Although Great Britain currently maintains full sovereignty, the United Nations recognizes the islands as a disputed territory, and many countries support Argentina's right to continue demanding negotiations.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had planned to visit Argentina after his trip to the United States, but the visit was postponed. According to a report on Ynet News on Saturday night, President Javier Milei, a staunch supporter of Israel, requested that the visit be delayed. The postponement comes amid upcoming parliamentary elections in Argentina and Milei’s concern that Netanyahu's visit could harm him politically. However, sources in Argentina reportedly believe this is part of a broader decision to postpone all visits by foreign leaders.
