Aid distribution turns chaotic in Gaza as thousands storm compound after Hamas tries to block access

Hamas set up roadblocks to prevent Gaza residents from reaching two aid distribution centers that opened today in the Rafah area – this was reported this evening (Tuesday) on Kan News. Palestinians were outraged by the roadblocks, which eventually collapsed.
Following the breach of the roadblocks and the announcement by the American security team that the compound would close at 5:30 p.m., a large number of residents began flocking to the site. This created a crush of Palestinian residents who insisted on entering the compound that same day, which ultimately led to the entry of thousands of people.
A security official said this evening that the defense establishment “considers today’s aid distribution a success” and that “the fear barrier from Hamas has been broken.” According to him, “Throughout the day, Hamas tried to prevent Gaza residents from reaching the distribution centers, but the population reached the centers and took food. Hamas is trying to thwart the American plan because it directly undermines its governing capabilities.”
It was also reported this evening that IDF troops did not intervene in the event. Moreover, the IDF Arabic-language spokesperson did not call on Gazans to come and receive aid packages; the entire operation was conducted under American management.
In total, about 8,000 food packages – containing roughly 460,000 meals – were distributed today at the Tel al-Sultan compound. The American company told Kan News this evening:
“We prepared for the possibility that a hungry crowd would break into the compound after a prolonged wait in the sun. The security team moved the staff back and brought the situation under control.”
Tomorrow, this compound, along with another in the Rafah area, is expected to reopen. The managers of the American company are currently holding discussions to draw lessons from the event and ensure better crowd control tomorrow.
Today’s incident reflects the concerns raised within the IDF’s top ranks when a proposal was made by political leadership and cabinet members for IDF soldiers themselves to distribute food to Gaza residents.
