Israeli sprinter Blessing Afrifah wins gold for Israel: ‘I fought to represent this country’

Israeli athlete Blessing Afrifah, who won the gold medal yesterday in the 200-meter race at the European Under-23 Championships, was interviewed on Sunday on the program "Bachatzi Hayom" on Kan Reshet Bet Radio.
He spoke about the moment of victory and his raising of the Israeli flag immediately afterward.
"First of all, I'm very, very happy. I'm happy to finish the championship with the Israeli flag on me – it’s an honor," said Afrifah.
"I'm glad I was able to bring a bit of light, a bit of joy during these difficult times. I'm truly happy. Proud to defend my title. There's no one happier than me."
When asked about antisemitism among the participants in the championship, he explained, "We're far from all that here—we’re really on good terms with everyone."
Afrifah, 21, also referred to the fact that only a few years ago he received Israeli citizenship, even though he was born and raised in the country to two Ghanaian migrant workers.
"It was not easy at all. I was prevented from traveling abroad and representing the Israeli national team in international competitions. That was very, very hard for me, but I really fought for it – so I could represent the country like I always wanted and dreamed."
"Getting citizenship gave a real boost to my career, and here I am, representing the country and winning medals, just like I always wanted."
