Jerusalem population surpasses 1 million, marking major milestone for the city

According to the latest data put out by the Israeli government, the total population of Jerusalem has reached 1,046,300.
The data was released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), in anticipation of next week’s celebration of Jerusalem Day, Ynet News reported.
The report noted that the newly released statistics included both Jews and Arabs.
The Jewish residents of Jerusalem make up approximately 57% of the city’s total population, while Arab residents make up about 38%.
About half of the Jewish residents are ultra-Orthodox Jews.
The CBS report also revealed a high percentage of young people in the city.
“The capital has a young population with 31.7% children up to 14 years of age, compared to 18.9% in Haifa and 18.2% in Tel Aviv,” Ynet reported. “Just 9.5% of residents in Jerusalem are 65 and older compared to 20.7% in Haifa and 15.6% in Tel Aviv.”
The data showed that the high birth rate in Jerusalem, with 25,680 babies being born in Jerusalem last year, is due to the disproportionately high birth rates of Jewish mothers.
Previous research has shown that Orthodox Jewish communities have exceptionally high birth rates.
As a result, Israel remains the only Western democracy with a birth rate above replacement level.
Last year, Israel’s fertility rate was 2.9 children per woman, with the next countries on the list being at just 1.8.
Citing a study looking at 2020 data, the Times of Israel reported, “The total fertility rate among ultra-Orthodox women in Israel was 6.6, while the rate among Arab women was 3.0, and among secular Jewish women it was 2.0.”
