The island nation of Taiwan has chosen Israel as the first country in the Middle East to join its working holiday program amid rising levels of global antisemitism.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has currently signed a bilateral agreement with 18 countries for the working holiday program. The agreement with Israel is designed to enable up to 200 young Israeli adults aged 18 to 30 to live and work in Taiwan for a year. The reciprocal program will allow an equal number of young Taiwanese adults to live and work in Israel, offering participants on both sides the chance to experience life as temporary residents and deepen their understanding of each other’s culture and society.

Taiwan’s decision to include Israel signals an interest in deepening ties, as the program aims to build human bridges between Taiwan and Israel.

“We warmly welcome more and more young Israelis – adventurous and creative in spirit – to explore our beautiful, diverse, and friendly country,” explained Ya-Ping Abby Lee, the head of Taiwan’s representative office in Israel.

The Taiwanese official further emphasized the advantages of the bilateral program.

“Taiwan is a unique place that blends Eastern and Western cultures, stunning nature, and modern urban landscapes. Beyond its beauty, the working holiday program encourages international friendships and cultural exchange. It allows participants to meet fellow travelers from around the world and connect with locals who open the door to everyday life in Taiwan. Many participants stay in touch with the friends they make during their stay, and we’re confident our Israeli friends will feel at home as we foster meaningful cross-cultural relationships,” Abby Lee said.

Israel, which attaches great importance to various international programs, previously signed similar working holiday agreements with Australia, Austria, South Korea, Germany, the Czech Republic and New Zealand.

Though located at opposite ends of Asia, Taiwan and Israel are both vibrant democracies and technologically advanced societies. Both have achieved success despite enduring significant external security challenges.

In October 2023, just weeks after the Oct. 7 massacre in southern Israel, the Taiwanese representative office in Israel donated $70,000 to IDF soldiers and Israeli families in need through the non-profit organization, Pitchon-Lev.

At the time, Ya-ping Lee expressed pride in supporting the Jewish state and showing solidarity with the Israeli victims of the Hamas atrocities.

"I take immense pride in Taiwan's swift expression of solidarity and condolences for the tragic loss of life in Israel. Today, on behalf of the Taiwanese people and government, I am honored to announce our partnership with Pitchon-Lev. It exemplifies Taiwan's commitment to assisting those in need, regardless of their background, beliefs, or gender," Ya-ping Lee stated.
