IDF warns: Lebanon ceasefire on shaky legs due to Hezbollah attacks ahead of next round of Beirut-Jerusalem talks

Following several days of Hezbollah violating the ceasefire in Lebanon by attacking IDF soldiers, military sources warned that the ceasefire could collapse at any moment just ahead of a second round of negotiations between the governments in Beirut and Jerusalem.

The Trump administration has taken a leading role in promoting the ceasefire and the talks, which are set to be held on Thursday in Washington, D.C., and is pressuring both sides to avoid a renewal of fighting.

Hours before the meeting, reports indicated that U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee was recalled to the U.S. to join the talks set to be held on Thursday in Washington, D.C., while the U.S. embassy in Beirut issued a warning to American citizens in Lebanon to “leave the country immediately—as long as commercial flights are still available.”

The ceasefire has continued to hold despite numerous violations by Hezbollah, including attempts to approach Israeli soldiers in the field, as well as a drone launch on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day, rocket launches on Wednesday, and another drone launch overnight.

On the other side, Lebanon has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire with several airstrikes, including one in the village of at-Tiri, in the Israeli-held part of southern Lebanon, which killed a journalist of the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Akhbar newspaper.

“Targeting journalists, obstructing access to them by relief teams, and even targeting their locations again after these teams arrive constitutes described war crimes,” charged Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

A senior Lebanese army official had claimed to Reuters that an Israeli drone dropped a grenade on the rescue teams trying to recover the bodies.

The IDF later explained that it identified two vehicles that departed from a “military structure used by Hezbollah,” which then crossed the ceasefire line and approached Israeli troops “in a manner that posed an immediate threat to their safety.”

The IDF said it struck one of the vehicles as well as the building from which they had departed, while denying reports that it had prevented rescue teams from recovering the bodies.

“The details of the incident are under review,” the IDF said, adding that “It should be noted that the map of the Forward Defense Line has been published and the area has been evacuated.”

In the face of these incidents, IDF officials told Ynet News that “The ceasefire is fragile, it could collapse at any moment.”

“We are determined to complete operations in the security zone to prevent direct fire at northern residents. Hezbollah is trying to create new equations and reorganize during the ceasefire. To preserve achievements here, this area must remain as it is. The return of (Lebanese) residents will make the defense mission much more complex and difficult.”

In another incident on Wednesday, the IDF said it apprehended a terrorist of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force, after he was beat up by Christian locals in the town of Rmeish.

The town and two other Christian villages, including the one where an IDF soldier defaced a crucifix, are the only villages in the buffer zone whose residents were allowed to stay.

The terrorist had been “planning an imminent attack against IDF soldiers,” the military said, adding he surrendered and “was then transferred to Unit 504 for further questioning.”

According to i24 News, the terrorist was beaten and stabbed by locals in Rmeish, who then contacted Unit 504 to apprehend him. When soldiers of the IDF’s Haredi Hashmonaim Brigade arrived in the town, the terrorist at first managed to flee before he was identified on the outskirts of the town, where he surrendered after the troops opened fire.

Israeli soldiers continue to find weapons caches and unidentified terror infrastructure across the buffer zone. The IDF said troops found “weapons, surveillance equipment, an RPG launcher, ammunition, and a Hezbollah flag” in a structure in al-Khiam, “an RPG launcher, sniper weapons, and additional military equipment” in Beit Lif, and “drones and warheads, military equipment, ammunition crates, magazines, and Kalashnikov rifles” in Adshit al-Qusayr, among others.
