Deepening rift within Iran’s leadership amid renewed US strikes - report

Iran’s leadership is facing growing internal divisions and a power struggle as the United States resumes military strikes and President Donald Trump casts doubt on the ceasefire agreement, The New York Times reported.

According to the report, tensions have intensified during the mourning period following the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. President Masoud Pezeshkian's camp, which supports continuing negotiations with Washington, is increasingly at odds with hardliners who oppose any agreement with the United States.

The report says the divisions spilled into violence during funeral events, with hardline supporters confronting Pezeshkian and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reportedly being pelted with stones and forced to flee.

The newspaper added that Iranian officials have described the political system as being in “chaos,” with no consensus on whether to escalate militarily or continue pursuing diplomacy. While Iranian officials accused the United States of violating its commitments, they also condemned the attacks on senior officials and warned that the country's internal divisions are benefiting its adversaries.
