Trump reportedly offers Lebanon full IDF withdrawal in exchange for normalization with Israel
U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly offered Lebanon a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in exchange for normalizing relations with Israel and joining the Abraham Accords, according to the Lebanese newspaper Ad-Diyar.
The report, published by Lebanese journalist Nour Naameh, cited an unnamed senior Gulf diplomatic source who described the alleged U.S. offer as an official commitment. However, the article provided no documents to substantiate the claim and did not specify when the alleged offer was made or whether a timetable for an Israeli withdrawal had been discussed.
The White House has not confirmed or denied the report.
The Trump administration has brokered direct diplomatic talks between Israel and Lebanon in recent months. In June, Lebanon and Israel signed a trilateral agreement with U.S. support, linking an Israeli withdrawal to the disarmament of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror organization. Israel has stressed that its military presence in southern Lebanon is intended to protect northern Israeli communities from Hezbollah attacks.
Senior Israeli officials, speaking anonymously, did not directly address the reported U.S. offer but reiterated that an Israeli withdrawal depends on Hezbollah's disarmament.
"No withdrawal before Hezbollah is disarmed," the officials told The Jerusalem Post. They stressed that disarmament would have to extend across Lebanon, rather than being limited to areas near the Israeli border.
"A peace agreement after resolving the security issue and removing the threat to residents of the north, that is excellent and consistent with our objectives," they said.
The new Lebanese government has accused Hezbollah of dragging the country into an unnecessary war with Israel. In March, Beirut outlawed Hezbollah’s military activities, a move that was welcomed by Washington and Jerusalem as the first step towards disarming Hezbollah. However, the terror group has yet to disarm and vows to continue the “resistance” against Israel.
The report of a potential IDF withdrawal and normalization of Israel-Lebanon ties comes as the Trump administration is preparing for potential new military strikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Washington recently reportedly told its Gulf Arab allies to prepare for a possible military campaign in Iran after the U.S. midterm election in early November.
mission, which is scheduled to withdraw by January 2027.
Any potential diplomatic agreement between Washington and Tehran, which considers Hezbollah its most important regional proxy, could affect the group's future and Israel's military presence in Lebanon, as the Lebanese government continues to call for a full Israeli withdrawal. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun recently asked France to help secure an international peacekeeping force to replace the UNIFIL mission, scheduled to withdraw by January 2027.
