Why is the Left so terrified of a normalized Iran?
We followers of Yeshua know an extraordinary story in Mark 5 of a demon-possessed man, who was set free by Yeshua (Jesus) in the region of the Gadarenes, on the east side of the Sea of Galilee. The man lived in the tombs, and the Scripture says, “no one could bind him, not even with chains” (verse 3). Think of that—he was possessed with such evil, demonic power that he broke the chains! It says that night and day the man was “crying out and cutting himself with stones” (verse 5).
When Yeshua showed up, He cast the demons out of the man and into a herd of about 2,000 pigs. The pigs then ran off the cliff and drowned in the Sea of Galilee (verse 13). That’s a very large herd of pigs—even by today’s standards. Today, that herd of pigs could cost up to about $3 million. Some have speculated that it could have tanked the economy of the entire community.
Of course, that’s an amazing event, but to me, the most astonishing part of the account comes a few verses later. Skipping down to verses 14-15, we read that when the people in the city heard about it, they came out to see what had happened. And when they saw the one who had been demon-possessed “SITTING AND CLOTHED AND IN HIS RIGHT MIND … THEY WERE AFRAID” (verse 15).
Apparently, they weren’t too concerned about the man while he was crying out night and day, cutting himself, and breaking chains. That probably went on for years, possibly decades. (The man was clearly known in the community because the people recognized the stark difference in the “before” and “after.”) But when they saw him “clothed and in his right mind” they were afraid?
The Left Acts a lot Like the Gadarenes
The Left, especially in the United States, have not been at all concerned with Iran for the last 47 years while they were “crying out” hateful chants like “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” which are, to them, “the big Satan” and “the little Satan.” They haven’t been at all concerned that Iran has been “cutting itself” by slaughtering its own people for peacefully protesting. They haven’t been at all concerned that Iran has literally “lived in the tombs,” being solely a death cult since the Mullahs took control in 1979. They weren’t at all concerned when Iran was able to “break the chains” of sanctions that bound them financially, courtesy of Barak Obama’s disastrous nuclear deal (JCPOA) and $1.7 billion in cash. They weren’t at all concerned about any of that.
Now, that the United States and Israel have decimated the leadership of Iran’s evil regime, their military capabilities (sinking their entire Navy to the bottom of the sea, like the pigs), and tanking their economy by shutting down about $500 million of revenue per day, an Iran that’s “fully clothed and in its right mind” looks attainable. And the left is afraid! (1) They are terrified that Trump and Netanyahu will get credit for the most consequential foreign policy effort since World War II. (2) They are terrified that a normalized Iran will underscore how Obama, Biden, and others “kicked the can down the road” for decades. (3) They are terrified of the testimonies that will come out of a liberated Iran with freedom of speech that will expose just how bad it really was while they looked the other way and did nothing. (4) And they are terrified that a successful outcome will hurt them in the mid-term elections in November.
As the walls are seemingly closing in on the evil regime, and the normalization of Iran appears to be in sight, many on the Left—particularly in the United States—have begun to cheer for Iran! This is absolutely despicable, and although they are protected by the First Amendment’s freedom of speech, it’s quite bizarre that they are using that freedom to cheer on a regime that brutally murders its citizens who speak out against it.
Some Name-Calling
Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) reposted the headline, “At least 26 Iranian shadow fleet vessels bypass US blockade,” which was fake, by the way. He then added his one-word response: “Awesome.”
Thomas Friedman, a New York Times columnist, said he's "torn" about efforts to remove the Iranian regime over concerns it would politically benefit President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Wow. He actually said the quiet part out loud.
House Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL) posted on X, “No One Is Cheering on Iran, We Are Cheering Against a President Who‘s Doing Something That‘s Illegal.” So, he didn’t want to admit that he’s cheering for Iran, but if he wants Trump to lose, Iran has to win. There are only two sides: U.S./Israel vs. Iran. In last year’s World Series, if you wanted the Blue Jays to lose, that meant you wanted the Dodgers to win.
House Representative Adam Smith (D-WA), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said in an interview on MSNBC that he believes Iran is somehow more truthful than the White House regarding ceasefire negotiations. Can you imagine trusting the #1 state sponsor of terrorism on planet earth, that has lied about everything for 47 years (and believe they are justified in doing so by their Quran) more than a duly elected President of the United States of America?
House Representative Alexander Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has called for the military chain of command to refuse “illegal orders” (more on that below) and for the 25th Amendment.
Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said, “Illegal orders to make civilians suffer would be a black mark on our military and our country.” First of all, Kelly is a retired Navy captain, and he knows there are no “illegal orders” in the military unless it’s a blatant and egregious violation of international war laws—like raping or intentionally murdering civilians, etc. Kelly’s rhetoric could cause a gullible, young soldier to be court-martialed for doing something he would have never done—refusing an order by a superior. And secondly, he’s all of a sudden worried that we will “make civilians suffer.” But as the Gadarenes’ citizens looked the other way from the demon-possessed man, Kelly never said a word about the 40,000 innocent Iranian citizens, who were brutally murdered in the streets by the evil regime.
Unity
It’s okay to have a different point of view regarding foreign policy, but once our Commander-in-Chief or Prime Minister—of any party—makes a decision to go to war, we should all rally around our leadership and our troops and have some semblance of unity. Moreover, individuals who are influential should choose their words very carefully because the enemy will use them if they can. Joe Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned in March and began to speak out against Trump and the war in Iran very publicly. Being high profile and from the Trump administration, the Iranian state media immediately picked it up for their propaganda purposes.
These troublemakers should come to grips with the fact that Trump and Netanyahu were elected by the people and should support them, at the very least in times of war. There will be a time and place to debate policies, and that’s a good thing. “Iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17). But we must come into unity. Not a unity in which we all agree on everything, but a unity in which we all want what’s best for our country. “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation” (Matthew 12:25).
