Israeli man seriously injured in shooting attack in Samaria

An Israeli man in his 30s was seriously injured in a shooting attack near Neve Tzuf in the Benjamin region of Samaria on Sunday morning. 

Multiple reports said a Palestinian began shooting from his car towards a group of bathers at the Ein Raya spring near Neve Tzuf. 

The shooter reportedly abandoned his vehicle and fled to the nearby Palestinian village of Deir Nizam. 

The road near the spring is frequently traveled by both Israelis and Palestinians. 

The IDF has begun a search for the attacker and has instituted roadblocks around the village while it conducts searches. Reports say the military is using a helicopter to search for the shooter.

“Numerous IDF troops have launched a pursuit after the terrorist and are carrying out roadblocks in the area,” the military said in a statement. 

The injured man was taken by emergency services to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah. 

The shooting comes amid concern for an escalation of violence in Judea and Samaria in recent weeks, following several skirmishes between Arabs and groups of young Jewish settlers affiliated with the Hilltop Youth movement. 

The IDF had already begun increasing its troop presence in Judea and Samaria ahead of the High Holidays (Yom Kippur and Sukkot), including the deployment of “Etan” armored personnel carriers near Nablus and Huwara. 

Earlier this morning, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported an attack by settlers near the village of Lubban ash-Sharqiya, which injured at least two people, and caused damages to several vehicles. 

At the same time, settlers in several settlements near Huwara also reported attacks by Palestinians over the weekend, including one incident in which a Palestinian shot at an all-terrain-vehicle used on the settlement. No one was injured in that incident, and the settlers did not indicate if anyone was in the vehicle when it was shot. 

According to reports in Israeli media, the IDF Central Command, which is responsible for Judea and Samaria, has given several warnings about the increase in tension and the potential for escalation in the disputed territories.
