Iran’s IRGC using new tactics to target vessels in Strait of Hormuz
Iran is using new tactics to target vessels sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reports, citing two Iranian officials.
Tehran is attempting to restrict the passage of oil and liquefied natural gas through the waterway, driving up prices of both, in an effort to influence the U.S. elections and gain leverage over Washington.
"The aim is to frustrate efforts by the United States and its allies to bring down global oil prices," one of the officials told Reuters.
The news agency cited a U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, who said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have started using unarmed spotters in small boats called dhows, to identify potential targets.
One such dhow was destroyed by the U.S. military last week, the official said, stating that sailors confronted the vessel, instructed its occupants to abandon ship, and then destroyed it, without casualties.
